Captain DobeyÉYouÕre Dead

transcript by Sarah Spearey ugerchucker@hotmail.com

Federal Penitentiary: Day

(The alarm is going of, armed guards come pouring on to the grounds and up on the roof. Just outside a car is parked with two men inside. They hear a banging from inside a drain.)

Norris: Open it up.

(Pommier, the other man opens up the drain pipe with a crowbar and helps the escaped convict out.)

Moon: Come on, hurry up. Come on (They hurry back to the car, Pommier behind the wheel) Come on, come on, come on.

Norris: Relax moon. WeÕll be at the airfield in five minutes.

Moon: After four years, IÕm not relaxing. IÕll relax when the man who put me there is dead. Go, go. (They drive off)

The Squad Room: Day

(Hutch is behind his desk typing, while Starsky sits opposite, with his gun in his hand.)

Starsky: Why donÕt you just admit it? YouÕre ticked off because of what happened last night.

Hutch: No, IÕm not. Starsky, what was the colour of that car, the second car in that smashup. Was it red or orange?

Starsky: Neither. It was flamingo.

Hutch: Flamingo?

Starsky: Yeah. My mother had a 47Õ Studebaker. It was the same colour.

Hutch: No kidding.

Starsky: No. (pause) You sure it had nothing to do with last night?

Hutch: Yeah, IÕm sure. (Throws a book at Starsky) IÕve been meaning to give that to you for some time now.

Starsky: ŅMadam OlgaÕs Self-help Program to become Right-handed?Ó

Hutch: Starsky, if your best friend canÕt tell you, who can? (Drops off his report on DobeyÕs desk and comes back) Sooner or later youÕve got to realize that this whole world was designed for right-handed people. YouÕre just out of step.

Starsky: I do all right.

Hutch: ArenÕt you a little tired of doing just all right?

The Photo Lab: Day

(A technician is developing pictures of a big man knocking on a door.)

Dobey: And finally this one taken just 15 minutes before he was gunned down.

Miss. Sutton: You know thatÕs absolutely amazing. I donÕt think IÕve seen any of these photographs before.

Dobey: You know, Isaac Douglas wasnÕt just a civil rights leader he was one of my best friends. And in order to keep this investigation of this death open without official approval from the department, I need help. ThatÕs why I wanted to appear on a major TV show like yours.

Miss. Sutton: Well, Captain, youÕve certainly worked hard.

Dobey: But I canÕt take all the credit. I just make the public appearances. (He hands her an envelope and they leave) Quite a few of my detectives have given just about all their off duty time. Well, Miss. Sutton, IÕll send the blow ups over later.

Miss. Sutton: Fine

Dobey: See you this afternoon at your studio?

Miss: Sutton: IÕll be looking forwards to it, Captain Dobey. (They shake hands)

Dobey: Thanks again.

Miss. Sutton: Bye now.

Dobey: Bye-bye. (She walks off. He watches someone get a candy bar out of the machine and then puts money in it himself. Starsky and Hutch come down the corridor just as heÕs about to chose his bar)

Starsky: Hey Cap.

Dobey: Hi.

Starsky: Hey, youÕre not gonna buy a candy bar are you, huh? You started the diet this morning.

Dobey: Me? Put money in this machine, you kidding? (Hutch pulls the lever and a bar drops out)

Hutch: Look here, Starsky.

Starsky: Yeah.

Hutch: A candy bar (He opens it and hands it to Starsky)

Starsky: Thank you.

Hutch: YouÕre welcome.

Dobey: Hey, donÕt you two guys have a beat to cover.

Starsky: Oh sure.

Dobey: Well, how about getting on it.

Starsky: Thanks Cap. (They leave)

DobeyÕs House: Day

(Dobey stands in front of a mirror, fiddling around with his tie while his wife and daughter stand behind him)

Dobey: I donÕt know about this one.

Rosie: I think you look fine, Daddy. (She plays with it)

Dobey: You really like that one?

Edith: Harold, every tie you own is out here.

Dobey: I was looking for the one I wore when I spoke at the University club.

Edith: YouÕre wearing it. (The front door opens, Starsky, Hutch and Cal Dobey enter)

Cal: Dad

Dobey: WhatÕs going on?  (Awkward moment) Cal, you and Rosie run along, huh?

Cal: Come on, Rose.

Dobey: WhatÕs up?

Starsky: We just came from the chiefÕs office.

Dobey: So?

Starsky: Leo Moon escaped from prison two hours ago.

Hutch: Captain, it was a well-executed, well-organized break. A riot was staged to cover the getaway. Now, Roarke has ordered a unit stationed outside your house until Moon is recaptured.

Edith: Harold?

Starsky: WeÕll wait outside, Cap. (They leave the house)

Dobey: You better keep the kids inside. (Puts on his jacket) IÕll be back as soon as I can.

Edith: Do you have to go?

Dobey: Yes, I do. This TV show could open IsaacÕs case up. At the least, it will keep it before the public. Besides which, you know how hard IÕve worked for this. (Edith looks sad) Hey, now, come on. Give me a smile. ThatÕs better. Give me a kiss. (They kiss) WhoÕs the boss around here anyway?

Edith: I am.

(Dobey leaves. Starsky and Hutch are waiting outside.)

Hutch: Captain, thereÕs a squad car over there. Now, weÕve had R&I pull MoonÕs file, but we thought weÕd save some time by talking to you.

Starsky: YouÉyou know Moon better than anybody else on the force, right?

Well, yeah, I guess you could say that. We went to the academy together. (Yells) Rosie! Cal! (Steps over their bikes) What else can I tell you? About five years ago he disgraced himself and the department. He was convicted of extortion and murder one. I was instrumental in sending him to prison. The beat you guys now have now is the one he had. (Hutch picks up a bike)

Hutch: Well, then, well then heÕs got some friends in the area, right?

Dobey: That you can make book on.

Hutch: Okay.

Dobey: You know I donÕt care how many times you tell these kids theyÕre gonna leave their bikes out here anyway. Cal! Rosie!

Starsky: Captain, relax. IÕll take care of it. I used to leave my bike out when I was a kid too. (Leans the bike up)

Dobey: Yeah, I bet you did.

Hutch: Captain, if and when Moon comes to town heÕs probably gonna have to get in touch with one of his friends, right?

Dobey: Yeah. Leo had a girl, used to work for Frisco Fats. Her name was Lola. Lola Brenner. (Hutch opens the car door)

Hutch: Lola Brenner. WeÕll check with the fat man. Now, if we need anymore helpÉ

Dobey: IÕm gonna be at the TV station until 9:00. Then IÕm coming straight back here. (Gets in the car)

White Airport: Day

(A plane comes into land. Pommier is the pilot, Norris climbs out of the passenger seat and Moon follows from the back)

Norris: Mr. Pommier will take care of you from here. IÕll catch up with you later.

Moon: Has he got my goods?

Norris: HeÕs got everything you asked for. From a rifle with a high-powered scope, right on down the line. WeÕre just as anxious as you are that you complete your mission.

Moon: Yeah, IÕll bet you are. Before I do anything else I got a phone call to make.

Norris: ThereÕs a pay phone over there. (Gives him some change. Moon goes to make his call) Take good care of our friend.

Pommier: Until this is done, just like a baby. (Offers his hand)

Norris: IÕll see you later. (Leaves)

MacÕs Pool Room: Day

(A fat man is playing pool and laughing as heÕs winning.)

Fat Man: Move, kid. Four ball. (Pots the ball) Last ball. (Pots two balls) When you play with the king, youÕre gonna get burned. Be sure to come around next time you get paid, huh? (The kid leaves. Fat Man laughs until he spots Starsky. He turns to run but Hutch is behind him with a box)

Hutch: DonÕt be ridiculous, Fat Man. WhatÕre you gonna do? Out run us.

Fat Man: You guys got no business with me.

Starsky: We do, we do. (Hutch opens the box, itÕs full of doughnuts. He tries to take one, but Starsky slaps his hand)

Fat Man: You want information.

Starsky: Maybe the kind that can save your life.

Hutch: Leo Moon busted out of jail today.

Starsky: There ainÕt a hole bigger enough for you to hide in, Fat Man, so youÕre gonna have to talk to us. Or start getting yourself fitted for a piano crate. You testified against Leo Moon and he ainÕt gonna forget that.

Fat Man: I want protection.

Hutch: We want Lola Brenner.

Fat Man: Lola? Sure, if anyone would know where Leo wasÉ

Starsky: No, we already know that, Fat Man. The question is, where do we find her? From everybody weÕve talked to so far, sounds like she dropped off the planet.

Fat Man: Let me make some phone calls and IÕll get back to you guys.

Hutch: Well, you make it fast. It could mean your chubby cheeks. (He gives Fat Man the box. Starsky stares at the open box)

Starsky: IsnÕt that nice. (He takes one and slowly sucks his thumb clean)

KBEX Studios: Day

(Starsky and Hutch are on the set of the TV show DobeyÕs appearing on)

Director: All right, everybody, quiet on the set. This is a rehearsal.

Starsky: You know, this is really something.

Hutch: Yeah.

Starsky: IÕve never been in a TV studio before. Have you?

Hutch: Yeah, once, when I was a kid my Cub Scout group was on the Maxi Malone show.

Starsky: Maxi Malone show, hey I remember him. He was that little midget, right?

Hutch: Yeah, you know something about him?

Starsky: What?

Hutch: He was left handed too.

Starsky: There you see.

Hutch: Yeah.

Starsky: I used to watch his show every day. Hey, whatever happened to him?

Hutch: He was arrested.

Starsky: For what?

Hutch: I donÕt know. My mother never let me read that part of the story. Look at Dobey over there. They say when youÕre on television you gain about 10 pounds.

Starsky: Yeah, thatÕs for sure.

(DobeyÕs sat opposite Miss. Sutton on the set with pictures of Isaac Douglas on the wall behind them)

Miss. Sutton: Off-the-record, Captain Dobey, who do you think was involved in the Douglas killing?

Dobey: Off-the-record or on the record, if I knew IÕd be there arresting him.

Miss. Sutton: Yes, but you must have some idea.

Dobey: Well, let me put it this way, Miss. Sutton, we know Isaac Douglas was stirring up trouble in the city finance office. He was using some pretty important names. For instance, C.J Woodfield. (Shows her a picture of the old man)

Miss. Sutton: Oh, yes. I remember now.

WoodfieldÕs Office: Day

(Woodfield arrives at his office with Crenshaw where Norris has been waiting.)

Norris: Hello, Mr. Woodfield.

Woodfield: Sorry to have kept you waiting, Norris.

Norris: No, thatÕs quite all right.

Woodfield: Moon is here and happy, ready to do his job?

Norris: ThatÕs right and chomping at the bit.

Crenshaw: I still donÕt like it.  How do we know we can trust Moon?

Woodfield: The beauty of it is, Crenshaw, we donÕt have to trust him.

Norris: Moon has no idea who we are or why we helped him escape from prison. The manÕs single person in life is to kill Dobey.

Woodfield: DonÕt you see? We kill Dobey now, using this crazy ex-cop. Then itÕs all over. And thereÕs no possible connection to us or the Isaac Douglas killing, because quite frankly, Crenshaw, you canÕt even imagine the things Moon plans to do to that family.

The Streets: Night

(Starsky and Hutch are cruising around, while Fat man makes a phone call at the pool hall)

Dispatch: Zebra Three come in, please.

Hutch: Zebra Three over. (Blooper: Inside the car its daylight and the car is now left right hand drive and theyÕve changed clothes)

Dispatch; Message from Frisco Fats: See the woman at the message parlour, 14th and Hudson. Repeat the massage parlour at 14th and Hudson.

Message parlour: Night

Hutch: The Fat Man sent us over here, said you could help us find Lola Brenner.

Ethel: It figures. Cops, huh?

Starsky; Afraid so.

Ethel: Oh well, you win some you lose some. (She moves to a table where two girls wearing the same outfits are playing chess) Oh well, you know, thatÕs the trouble with you younger generation. (Moves a chess piece) No respect for age. Check.

Starsky: Well, look, could you tell us something about Lola?

Ethel: Honey, it looks like weÕre all out of luck tonight.

Starsky: WhyÕs that?

Ethel: After FatÕs called, I sent one of the girls over to LolaÕs place. Man, she split. Bag and baggage.

Hutch: Any idea where?

Ethel: I canÕt say for sure, but she was in some big hurry after she got a phone call this afternoon.

Hutch: You know from who?

Ethel: Well, sure I sitting at the desk taking phone calls, wasnÕt I? I really couldnÕt hear what he had to say. There some kind of funny noise like a airplane engines or something like that making a terrible racket in the background.

Starsky: What was his name? Did you catch a name?

Ethel: Well, sure. Just a minute. (Goes over to her desk) I think I got it right here. His name was. Here is it, ŌLeoÕ yeah, thatÕs it.

Hutch: ThereÕs a number there too.

Ethel: Ah huh. Lola wasnÕt here at the time so I had to get his number so she could call him back.

Starsky: If Moon was calling from an airport he might have just beat all those road blocks. He might have flown right over them.

Hutch: DobeyÕs

Starsky: See ya, sweetheart.

Ethel: Baby, I hope so.

DobeyÕs house: Night

(A police car is parked across the road. Leo Moon is watching the house. Inside, Edith and Cal are watching Dobey on the TV)

Dobey: Then he turned to me and said: ŅHarold, if IÕm defiance of that unjust law tomorrow you just may have to arrest me.Ó Shortly before he was killed.

Cal: Right on, dad.

(Moon is outside, listening in)

Dobey: Éthe September 8th mach for hiring minorities.

Miss. Sutton: IÕm sorry, Captain Dobey, but we have run out of time. I just want to thank you very much for coming here tonight.

Dobey: Thank you.

Miss. Sutton: And thank you all for joining us. (Edith turns off the TV)

Edith: All right, young man. ItÕs time for you to be getting to your homework.

Cal: Yeah, I guess I better. Mom, can I have some ice cream?

Edith: You just had a huge bowl of popcorn.

Cal: Yeah, I know, but I always get hungry when I eat popcorn. (The phone rings)

Edith: IÕll get it. (Outside Moon skulks around the house with a pair of pliers, while Edith answers the phone)

Dobey: How did I do?

Edith: Oh, honey, you were terrific.

Dobey: IÕm all finished here, so IÕll be leaving in a few minutes, okay?

Edith: Okay.

Dobey: Did you lock up?

Edith: Yes, yes all the doors are locked.

Dobey: Good, IÕll be home in 20 minutes.

Edith: All right, all right, IÕll see you then. Bye-bye. (Hangs up. She opens the blinds to look out the window at the police car across the street. She shuts the blinds and passes Cal and his ice cream on her way to the kitchen) Well, I see you didnÕt waste any time.

(Outside Moon cuts the power, all the lights go out)

Cal: Mom?

Edith: Cal, itÕs probably just a power failure, but I donÕt think it would do any harm to get a hold of your father. (She feels her way to the phone)  Hello operator? Yes, would you get me the number of television station channel 6, please?

(Outside, Moon cuts the phone line, cutting off the call)

Edith: ButÉhello? Hello? Operator? Hello? Hello? (The back door window is broken) Cal, go upstairs. First lock your sister in her room and then bring me down your fatherÕs spare gun.

Cal: All right.

(In the kitchen Moon feels for the locks while Edith goes to the fire place and arms herself with a poker. Moon manages to unlock one lock, but Edith comes in and smacks his hands. He manages to grab her, she struggles)

Edith: Help! (Cal comes in with the gun. MoonÕs got her by the throat, but she pulls free knocking the gun out of CalÕs hand. While Moon tries the locks again Edith picks up the gun) I have a gun. IÕm warning you.

(Moon manages to open the door, but Edith fires, shooting him. He backs off.)

Edith: Come on Cal, come with me. Watch it. (They make it to the living room and open the blinds. The policeman is still in his car)

Cal: Why doesnÕt he do something?

Edith: I donÕt know, but IÕm sure gonna find out.

Cal: Mama. (She heads for the door and gives Cal the gun)

Edith: Bolt the door after me. Protect your little sister. (She goes out and Cal locks the door. She runs across the street to the car) Officer? Officer? Officer. (She reaches the car and pats the officer on the shoulder, but he pitches forwards with a knife in his back. Edith is terrified, she stumbles into the road and a car heads right for her. She screams, but the car stops, itÕs the Torino. Hutch runs to Edith)

Hutch: Edith, itÕs all right, itÕs Hutch. (He takes her in his arms) ItÕs all right. ItÕs all right. Come on now.

R Service: Night

(Moon is hiding in a storage warehouse. Lola is lying on a cot as Moon enters with his shirt off and a bandage around his waist. HeÕs attaching a silencer to his rifle)

Moon: All right, baby. WeÕre almost home. Now, once Dobey is dead itÕs a plane for South America and $50.000 cash. W can do a lot out there with that kinda money.

Lola: If youÕre still alive.

Moon: IÕm beginning to wonder which way youÕd prefer it.

Lola: Four years is a long time the way IÕve had to live.

Moon: Where the hell do you think IÕve been? On a picnic. Now, tonight, Dobey made the down payment for those four years. Tomorrow he pays the whole bill. (He looks through the scope)

DobeyÕs House: Night

(There are police cars surrounding the house, StarskyÕs outside, by his car speaking on the radio)

Starsky: Yeah, give me a trace on the following number. 555-1329.

(Inside the house DobeyÕs consoling his crying wife.)

Dobey: Yes, Edith. I know, baby. (He gives her his handkerchief) Come on, sit down. ItÕs gonna be all right. (She sits and he hugs her. Cal enters)

Cal: Dad, they said that the phones are working though they have to send a man out tomorrow to make the connection permanent

Dobey: Good, Cal. Rosie?

Cal: IÕll go check on her.

Dobey: And close the door will you, Cal?

Cal: Okay. (Leaves and closes the door)

Dobey: Now, everythingÕs gonna be all right baby. The familyÕs together and he canÕt hurt us now.

(The phone rings in the hallway where Hutch is speaking to a uniformed officer.)

Hutch: Okay thatÕs it. (Starsky enters)

Starsky: That number Ethel gave us is from a pay phone at White Airfield.

Hutch: White Airfield.

Starsky: WhereÕs Dobey?

Hutch: HeÕs in with Edith. (Dobey enters; Starsky picks up the phone and hands it to Dobey.)

Dobey: Thanks. Hello?

Moon: Hello, old pal.

Dobey: Moon? (He looks at Starsky and Hutch and points to the living room. Edith comes out)

Moon: I just wanted to let you know IÕm in town. TomorrowÕs for real.

Dobey: YouÕre a sick man, Leo.

Moon: ThatÕs right, IÕm sick, but youÕre dead. (Hangs up)

Dobey: Edith. Now, I want you to go upstairs and pack. Its better if you and the children wait over at your motherÕs until this is over.

Edith: But youÕre my husband and this is our home. I donÕt want to leave you and neither do the children.

Dobey: EdithÉletÕs talk it over in here. (Directs her into the living room)

Hutch: White Airfield, huh? A lot of light plane traffic out there.

Starsky: Yeah, which means we gotta check an awful lot of planes before we find the plane Moon might have come in on.

Hutch: Yeah.

Starsky: Hey. (Nods to Rosie on the stairs.)

Hutch: Hi, Rosie. We didnÕt hear you come down here.

Rosie: Why does that man wanna hurt us and make my mama cry? (Comes down halfway and met by Hutch)

Hutch: Come here, sweetheart. (Sets her on his lap) I guess because that man isnÕt very nice. He used to be a policeman. He was a bad policeman and your daddy helped put him in jail.

Rosie: Did he rob banks?

Hutch: No, I donÕt think he robbed any banks, but he did a lot of other things werenÕt very nice.

Rosie: Please donÕt let him hurt my daddy. (Hugs her)

Hutch: No, we wonÕt.

White Airfield: Day

(Hutch is talking to a man in charge of renting places.

Fry: Yeah and the third guy. The third guy was big, you know, muscular. And he had a wicked looking scar running right across this face.

Hutch: Is this the guy?

Fry: Yeah, right, thatÕs him. (Hutch taps on the glass, Starsky is on the other side. FryÕs on the phone) Now, wait a minute. I want you to check that out again.

Hutch: He just identified Moon from the picture.

Starsky: Great.

Hutch: Did you come up with anything?

Starsky: No, the planeÕs a rental. A cleaning crew went through it a half hour after it came in. There wasnÕt a usable print in the whole thing.

Fry: No. Yeah, all right, all right. Thanks, yeah. (Hangs up) Ah, gentleman look, IÕm afraid to tell you that the license and the name that the pilot used they were both phoney.

Hutch: WhatÕs the matter with you people? DonÕt you check out who rents your planes?

Fry: Yeah, usually.

Hutch: What do you mean usually?

Fry: I knew him, I mean, you know, IÕve seen him around.

Starsky: Here?

Fry: No. When I worked at the airfield at Mandalay Heights. He flew for Woodfield industries.

Starsky: Wait a minute. C.J. Woodfield.

Fry: ThatÕs right. He was the old manÕs private pilot. (They head outside)

Starsky: C.J. Woodfield. His companyÕs one of those that Isaac DouglasÕ named as getting special treatment on city contracts.

Hutch: Wait a minute. So if heÕs the one Douglas had the goods onÉnow with Dobey trying to re-open that investigation things could get pretty hot for Woodfield right?

Starsky: Then if he wanted to kill Dobey what better way than to bust a crazy like Moon of out of prison.

Hutch: Then to ensure that Moon doesnÕt get hung up on a roadblock, Woodfield has one of his pilots rent a plane under a phoney name fly upstate and pick him up.

Starsky: Man, this whole thing is getting really scary. All of a sudden weÕre in the middle of a conspiracy that DobeyÕs been trying to pin down for over a year.

Hutch: Well, what have we got, huh? The pilot.

Starsky: Well, even if we make him itÕs gonna be an awfully long way before we prove that Woodfield himself was involved.

Hutch: Well, Moon is the key.

Starsky: Yeah.

Hutch: And he missed last night.

Starsky: Right.

Hutch: ThatÕs gonna make him nervous, huh?

Starsky: Maybe theyÕll make a mistake.

Hutch: LetÕs hope so.

(Cut to driving down a dirt road)

Hutch: Zebra Three to control. WeÕre en route to Mandalay Heights Airport. Notify Dobey, weÕll check with him from there.

Mandalay Heights Airport: Day

(Starsky and Hutch speak to a mechanic while heÕs working)

Mechanic: Yeah, yeah, sure. The pilot you guys are talking about is Marty. A Marty Pommier, Pommier. P-O-M-M-I-E-R.

Hutch: YouÕre sure of the spelling?

Mechanic: I ought to be. HeÕs signed enough work orders for me. I do most of the maintenance on the Woodfield plane. (Starsky takes his screwdriver)

Starsky: You always do your maintenance early on a Sunday morning?

Mechanic: I donÕt think I should be talking to you two guys. (Hutch stops him from picking up his tool)

Hutch: YouÕre gonna talk to us one way or the other pal. Make it easy on yourself. (Lets him go)

Mechanic: WoodfieldÕs people call in the middle of the night; say they got a rush-rush job. I have to have the plane ready for a long range flight no later than noon.

Hutch: Well, then you got one hour to get Pommier for us.

Mechanic: Hey, I ainÕt got time to be running your errands. I got to get this plane in the air.

Starsky: Look, I donÕt know how to break this to you, pal, but if Pommier is the guy weÕre after youÕre not gonna get anything in the air today.

Hutch: Your bosses ainÕt gonna like it if we close this place down and weÕll close it down unless we get the answers we want. (Hutch hands Starsky a number and he puts it in the mechanic pocket) You can reach us at this number. ThatÕs one hour. (They walk towards the Torino) ThatÕs interesting. A suddenly scheduled long range flight. Be a good way for Leo Moon to get out of the country.

Starsky: They only part that bothers me is that itÕs scheduled for noon.

R Services: Day

(Moon is combing his hair in a mirror; the clock says 9:30. When heÕs done he throws the comb to Lola.)

Moon: This is was I call being dressed to kill, right? (Pommier enters)

Pommier: Everything is set. You leave in 30 minutes.

Moon: I want to be on time. The CaptainÕs never late for Sunday service, right?

Lola: How do you know the police will even let the hearse near the church?

Pommier: Because the funeral arrangements we made three days ago, by one of the most reputable mortuaries in the city. Shall we try your casket on?

Moon: LetÕs go.

DobeyÕs House: Day

(Starsky and Hutch are sat with Dobey while heÕs having his breakfast.)

Dobey: If youÕre right, youÕre only one step away from tying C.J Woodfield not only to MoonÕs escape, but IsaacÕs murder. But on the other hand if youÕre wrongÉWoodfieldÕs a powerful enough man to see to it that weÕre all walking a beat in a bean field.

Starsky: ThatÕs what I like about you, cap, you always look at the bright side.

Hutch: Did I ever tell you about my aunt? She was left handed.

Starsky: No. What did you family do lock her up in the attic.

Hutch: Yeah, sometimes. HowÕd you know?

Dobey: Hey, what are you talking about?

Hutch: DidnÕt you ever notice about left handed people, Captain, their a little strange. (Phone rings)

Dobey: Answer the phone Hutch.

Hutch: (Answers) Yeah, DobeyÕs. No, this is a Detective Hutchinson. Yeah, weÕd appreciate that. WeÕll be there in about twenty minutes. (Hangs up) C.J Woodfield just invited us to breakfast.

WoodfieldÕs House: Day

(Woodfield is sat at the head of a long table with Norris and Starsky and Hutch are sat opposite each other at the end.)

Woodfield: Heavenly Father we thank thee for the food weÕre about to eat and ask thy divine grace and guidance for those who are about to share thy bounty. Amen.

Starsky: Amen.

Woodfield: I am a simple man from simple roots, Mr. Detectives. I like to feel I can keep close to my creator. I hope me little invocation didnÕt make you feel uncomfortable.

Starsky: Oh no. (A butler comes round taking the lids off the food)

Hutch: No, no, why should it?

Woodfield: One never can tell these days with lawlessness and anti-patriotism, running rampant across the nation.

Norris: Excuse me Mr. Woodfield; I think youÕre forgetting these two gentlemen are officers of the law.

Woodfield: Oh yes, yes. Now, I believe you two are interested in talking to me about something to do with Mr. Pommier?

Starsky: Yes, weÕd like to ask you a few questions.

Norris: I think the point Mr. Woodfield was trying to make was what sort of questions you want to ask.

Starsky: Oh.

Hutch: Was your pilot involved in helping a man escape from prison yesterday? (Woodfield sputters and laughs)

Woodfield: Escape from prison? Oh, somebody has certainly sent you off on a wild goose chase.

Hutch: (Starts to eat) why do you say that?

Norris: Marty was with us all day yesterday.

Starsky: All day?

Woodfield: Yes. Most of the day. We were talking about a trip heÕs gonna make for us this afternoon.

Starsky: We still want to find him if you can tell us where he is.

Woodfield: WeÕve just told you, Marty was with us.

Hutch: Quite frankly sir we donÕt believe you. Could I have some more milk, please?

Starsky: We want to see Mr. Pommier. And we want to see him now. If we find out the two of you knew where he was and we werenÕt telling us, weÕre gonna come back here and arrest the pair of you for obstructing justice. (Woodfield tries to get his crutches on and to his feet, Norris helps.)

Woodfield: I can see now it was a mistake inviting you here this morning. Norris, I want their names and badge numbers.

Hutch: Just tell them Starsky and Hutch. TheyÕll know who we are.

Starsky: HeÕs Hutch, IÕm Starsky. (Stands up)

Woodfield: IÕm not in the habit of being called a liar and I donÕt like it. And I donÕt think my friend the governor will like it.

Hutch: Well, by the same token sir, (stands up) we donÕt like anybody busted out of jail to kill our Captain.

Starsky: Causes unrest in the ranks. You never know who to invite to parties, or who toÉ

Woodfield: And believe me Mr. Detectives before IÕm through you two wonÕt like it.

Starsky: Oh, we stopped liking it long before when you first started serving this mush. (They leave)

Norris: EverythingÕs gonna be all right, Mr. Woodfield.

Woodfield: Not if they find Marty before moon has finished his job.

Norris: They canÕt. Not now, thereÕs not enough time.

R Service: Day

(Moon is lying in a casket, Lola hands him his gun)

Pommier: After youÕve killed Dobey, itÕs up to you to get back here. If you make it, IÕll pick you up at 11:30 and weÕll be in the air by noon.

Moon: IÕll make it. (To Lola) Be ready at 11:30. (Pommier places the top on and slides the casket into the hearse.)

DobeyÕs House: Day

(DobeyÕs on the phone)

Dobey: All right, fine. (Hangs up. He walks into the living room where his family is waiting, all dressed up for church) Well, everythingÕs set. WeÕre gonna arrive at church five minutes late, but we get better protection that way, just in case MoonÉ

Edith: Whatever you think best, dear.

Dobey: You know damn well what I think is best.

Edith: Harold, such language and on the way to church too. Come on, children (They

head for the door, CalÕs slightly in from of Edith)

Dobey: After your mother, young man. (DobeyÕs the last out)

In the Torino: Day

Dispatch: Zebra Three, come in, please.

Hutch: Zebra Three, over.

Dispatch: Partial information on suspect Pommier. Suspect has no local listed residence but does have a business address. 132 Marshall.

Hutch: Roger and out.

Starsky: ThatÕs in the warehouse district.

Church: Day

(The church bells are ringing and the hearse with Moon in pulls up in front of some policeman)

Cop: A little early, arenÕt ya? Regular services wonÕt be over for about an hour. All right, drive through here; you can park across the street.

(The hearse drives through and parks across the street.)

R Services: Day

(Lola is packing her suit case. She comes out of the office and spots Hutch looking through the window on the door. She runs back and locks the office door. Hutch opens the door and Starsky jumps in.)

Starsky: Hold it! (Tries the locked door while Lola tries for the window) Freeze! What do I do now?

Hutch: YouÕre the one she isnÕt listening to. Come on, Starsky.

Starsky: Look out. (Kicks the door down and grabs LolaÕs legs, carrying her kicking and screaming away from the window)

Lola: No! Stop! Stop!

Hutch: I donÕt think she likes you Starsky. (Starsky manages to restrain her on the bed) Too much for you partner?

Starsky: Next time we bust into a room, you yell ŅFreezeÓ

Hutch: Are you Lola Brenner?

Lola: Stuff it.

Hutch: Listen, you have a very easy choice, Lola. You can either spend the next 20 years of your life in a penitentiary or you can tell us where Leo Moon is.

Outside the Church: Day

(In the hearse, Moon takes the lid off and watches DobeyÕs car drive up outside the church with two police cars. Dobey gets out, following by Edith and the children)

Dobey: Edith, I want you to take the children and wait for me inside IÕll be there in a moment.

Edith: All right.

Dobey: Watch the door, Cal. (They head towards the church)

Cop: Everything is secure, captain. We have officers all around the perimeter.

(In the hearse, Moon takes his aim, looking through the scope at Dobey.)

On the Streets: Day

(The Torino races through the streets with the siren blaring)

Hutch: This is Zebra Three. Instruct all units protecting Captain Dobey that suspect Leo Moon is waiting in a hearse at the First Congregational Church.

(At the Church the cop sees the hearse across the street and hears the announcement. He heads for Dobey)

Dobey: Okay, letÕs go.

Cop: Down! Get down!

(Moon fires, his shot hits the window. The police return fire, hitting the hearseÕs windows. Moon continues to fire. He lies back down)

Moon: Go! Go! Go! (The hearse backs out)

Dobey: Come on, cut him off!

(Moon continues firing out the window as the hearse takes off. He Torino comes screaming round the corner with Hutch firing out the window. They follow the hearse and mange to shoot out a tire. The hearse pulls up to the curb. Hutch jumps out and rolls behind a tree. Moon fires at them from the cover of the door. He tries to fire and walk, but Hutch shoots him in the chest. Dobey and the police come running over. Dobey checks Moon and then heads over to Starsky and Hutch.)

Dobey: Thanks, I owe you guys one. You wanna go to the station and get started on your report. IÕll see you there in about an hour.

Starsky: Yeah, where will you be til then?

Dobey: I gave you yours thanks, didnÕt I? Now, IÕm gonna give the Lord his. (Walks off)

Woodfield Industries: Day

(Pommier is in WoodfieldÕs office, Woodfield is sat behind his desk. Crenshaw and Norris are there also)

Woodfield: We donÕt have any choice.

Pommier: ThatÕs easy for you to say, Mr. Woodfield, but IÕm the one the cops are after. IÕm getting out of the country.

Woodfield: YouÕll leave the country when I say you can.

Norris: We always knew Moon could fail. ThatÕs why we had the contingency plan.

Woodfield: Marty, youÕre the only one who can handle it.

Pommier: If I get caught, itÕs a pipeline straight back to here.

Crenshaw: If Dobey isnÕt killed it comes right back here anyway.

Norris: Marty, this way itÕll still be blamed on Moon.

Woodfield: We canÕt survive a new investigation in to DouglasÕ assassination or CrenshawÕs city contracts. LetÕs face it either way. Everything is on the line for all of us.

Pommier: All right. All right. But when itÕs done I want a plane ready when I get to the field.

Woodfield: But of course. (Pommier leaves) Norris, after heÕs planted the dynamite I think Marty will have outlived his usefulness. Take care of him.

Norris: Right.

DobeyÕs House: Day

(Dobey leaves his house and gets into his car. There are two policemen outside his house. He drives out of his driveway and passed a van parked outside the house with the name ŌTri-State Telephone Co.Õ on the side. Marty comes out front from the garden dressed in overalls)

Pommier: Tell him everythingÕs fine now. (He gets into the van and drives off. Meanwhile thereÕs a ticking inside the house, the dynamite has been planted under the house,)

The Station: Day

(Starsky, Hutch and Dobey enter the squad room)

Starsky: Well, Lola BrennerÕs not the brightest girl in the world, but she figured sheÕd get a better break if she helped us while you were still alive.

Dobey: What about Pommier?

Hutch: We got the airfield staked out, the warehouse, Woodfield Industries. If he moves, we got him.

Starsky: According to an FBI kick back Pommier was a demolitions expert in the Navy, then he worked for Woodfield Industries for 12 years as a pilot and an explosives man. (Dobey sits down)

Dobey: You know, there have been a lot of lonely hours these last few months. I even wondered if I was crazy trying to get IsaacÕs case reopened.

Starsky: Hey, captain, if we get Pommier and if we get him to talk we can blow this whole thing wide open. (Phone rings)

Hutch: Hutchinson. Hutchinson. Pommier, what? A telephone company uniform? Got it. (Hangs up) Our manÕs been spotted at Mandalay Heights Airfield. (Starsky and Hutch make their way to the door)

Dobey: Wait a minute. There was a telephone truck at my house this morning. The man was supposedly fixing the wires Moon cut last night.

Starsky: Looks like there not giving up. (Starsky and Hutch leave)

Dobey: Rose, get my wife on the phone, tell her to get the hell out of there. (Points to a man at his desk) You get the bomb squad. Tell them to be at my house right now.

(Leaves)

Mandalay Heights Airfield: Day

(While the Torino races to the airfield, Pommier runs to his plane, but Norris is there too, aiming a gun at him as Pommier gets in the plane. He fires and misses; Pommier takes cover under the wing. He runs, and returns fire. Norris fires again and gets out of the car to pursue. They both run and shoot through the car park until Norris shoots Pommier in the leg. At that time the Torino arrives. Norris runs for cover as Starsky and Hutch get out to pursue. They fire at each other until Norris is out of ammo. He tries to run away, but Hutch runs up some boarding stairs and jumps onto Norris, knocking him to the ground. He throws Norris against a helicopter and searches him. Starsky checks on Pommier)

The Station: Day

(Starsky, Hutch and Dobey walk down the corridor)

Dobey: You know the bomb squad took 12 sticks of dynamite from under my house, set to go off just as my family and I sit down for dinner.

Hutch: Is everybody all right?

Dobey: Yeah, but what about Pommier?  Is he gonna cooperate?

Starsky: Well, after Woodfield tried to kill him heÕs ready to talk about everything from MoonÕs escape from prison to DouglasÕ assassination.

Hutch: LetÕs get to it, huh? (They enter the interrogation room)

Woodfield Industries: Day

(Woodfield sits behind his desk looking over some files. Crenshaw enters)

Crenshaw: The police have just come in through the front gates and theyÕre on their way up.

Woodfield: Thank you. IÕd like to be alone, Crenshaw. (Crenshaw leaves. Woodfield opens a box on his desk and takes out a small gun. Starsky and Hutch enter. Hutch sees the gun and takes it and the box from Woodfield)

Woodfield: Well, Mr. Detectives, it seems we meet again.  What can I do for you?

Starsky: Not a thing, Mr. Woodfield. Mr. Pommier is already doing all thatÕs necessary down at the station. (Dobey enters)

Hutch: Mr. Woodfield, Captain Dobey.

Dobey: C.J Woodfield?

Woodfield: Yes.

Dobey: IÕm placing you under arrest for the murder of Isaac Douglas.

Woodfield: You, you gonna give me my rights, boy?

Dobey: YouÕre gonna get all your rights, CJ, including the rights you denied my friend, Isaac Douglas, the rights you have denied the people of this city by corrupting its political process even the rights you would deny me and my family. You have the right to remain silent.

DobeyÕs House: Day

(ItÕs RosieÕs birthday. And Dobey and Cal are playing twister in the living room)

Rosie: Left foot, blue.

Dobey: Left foot, blue? Okay. (Moves his foot)

Edith: Starsky and Hutch saved our lives. Now, I donÕt see why you canÕt give them a simple thank you.

Dobey: Because Edith, Starsky and Hutch are policeman. What they did was in the line of duty, no more, no less. Spin it again, Rosie.

Cal: So, whyÕd you recommend them for medals?

Dobey: Hey, look, can we just enjoy RosieÕs birthday without anymore shoptalk. (Starsky and Hutch are seen walking past the window)

Edith: Yes dear. (The door bell rings. Edith gets up to answer it.)

Rosie: Right hand, yellow. (Edith ushers Starsky and Hutch in indicating for them to stay quiet. StarskyÕs holding a cuddly bear)

Edith: All right, if um, if you donÕt want to admit to Starsky and Hutch themselves, why donÕt to admit to me that youÕre grateful to them for saving our lives. (Dobey slumps to the floor)

Dobey: Look, Edith, as Captain of the Detectives, IÕve got a certain image I have to maintain. As certain, ehÉ

Starsky: DignityÕs always a very good word. (Rosie runs up to them)

Rosie: Uncle Dave! Uncle Ken!

Starsky: Happy Birthday, Rosie. (Hands her the teddy)

Hutch: Hey, sweetheart (Gives her a kiss)

Rosie: For me?

Starsky: Well, I suppose you could let that big kid over there play with him if her promises to behave himself. (Rosie laughs)

Hutch: IÕve got one for you too, but you got to guess which hand. (She points to his right.)

Rosie: That one. (SheÕs wrong)

Starsky: Hey, hey, do that again.

Rosie: Do what?

Starsky: Point at his hand, the way you just did. (She points. Hutch gives her the present) YouÕre left handed, huh?

Rosie: Of course.

Starsky: Oh, you come here, my little pumpkin. (Picks her up) You are my partner.

RosieÕs left handed. Now, what are you gonna say to that?

Hutch: Well, one out of two isnÕt bad.

The End
