The
Fix
The Police Station: Night
(Starsky and Hutch bring in a handcuffed man, and stop at the candy machine.)
Hutch: Hey, Starsk you wanna right this one up? I got a call to make.
Starsky: Yeah, give me a dime, will ya.
Hutch: Why? (Digs into his pocket)
Starsky: IÕve only got 15 cents. Candy bar. If youÕve got another quarter you can have a candy bar too. (Catches the dime) Instant energy. (Hutch walks away) YouÕre gonna need it pal. (Looks around and then kicks the machine and a bar comes out.) Come on, fancy pants, tell me a story. (Pushes him into the squad room) Right over there tiger have a seat.
(Hutch is dialing a number but he hangs up when Starsky approaches the desk)
Starsky: (Mumbles around the candy car) Sit down.
Dobey: (Enters the room) Hutchinson.
Hutch: (Takes the phone to another desk) IÕm busy, IÕm busy.
Starsky: WhatÕcha got, Captain?
Dobey: Your partner signed this without putting the date in there.
Starsky: ItÕs love, Captain. Pinches the capillaries. Memory goes first. (Takes the paper) IÕll fill it in. (Dobey watches as he does.) There you go, cap.
Dobey: Thank you. (Leaves)
Hutch: Night, Captain.
(Cut to JeanneÕs house at the beach)
Jeanie: Hutch. What happened to you? You said youÕd be here two hours ago.
Hutch: IÕm sorry. I meant to call you and tell you IÕd be late, but Starsky and I got so busy and I just forgot.
Jeanie: I know, itÕs just that being alone hereÉI get scared Hutch. You didnÕt tell anyone, did you?
Hutch: Of course not.
Jeanie: Not even Starsky?
Hutch: Jeanie if I said I havenÕt told anybody, I havenÕt told anybody.
Jeanie: I miss you, Hutch. IÕll be so happy when you get here.
Hutch: As soon as I get changed and cleaned up then we can (Dobey comes out to the water cooler.) IÕll tell you when I get there.
Jeanie: All right, but hurry. Okay. (Hutch hangs up)
Hutch: Good night, Captain. See you slaves in a few days. Hey partner. Buy another candy bar. (Throws him some money walks out the door) Night.
Starsky: Love. ItÕs gonna out him in the poorhouse. Buy you a candy bar, Captain?
Dobey: Suppose you just finish that report.
HutchÕs house: Night.
(Hutch enters the front door, whistling happily. He turns the lights on and his gun holster in his closet. He throws the jacket on the bed. A man comes up behind him, but Hutch sees and throws him across the room. Another man comes at him and hits him over the head. Another man comes out)
Monk: Take him out the back. IÕll follow you. (Together the goons pick him up and take him out back)
Secret House: Night.
(A car drives into the driver way and the goons take Hutch out of the back seat and drag him into the house.)
JeanieÕs place: night
(SheÕs asleep on the sofa and is awoken by the phone.)
Jeanie: Hutch? No. No, you have the wrong number. (She hangs up and looks at her watch. She rings Hutch, but it only rings) Hutch. Hutch, where are you?
Secret House: Night
(Tom backhands Hutch across the face, while heÕs tied to a chair and blindfolded.)
Monk: Where is she Hutchinson?
Hutch: IÕm Starsky. I donÕt know what youÕre talking about.
Monk: DonÕt be stupid Hutchinson. SheÕs only a broad. You tell us where she is you wake up in your own bed tomorrow morning like nothing happened.
Hutch: I donÕt know what youÕre talking about.
Monk: Do it, Tom.
(Monk leaves and enters another room where Forest is standing with his back to Monk)
Forest: (Turns round) HowÕs it going?
Monk: Nobody saw us take him, we have his car outside in the garage, but heÕs not gonna tell us anything.
Forest: Why, just because heÕs a cop heÕs different? HeÕs gonna tell us where she is.
Monk: Why donÕt youÉwhy donÕt you just forget it. You can get any dame you want.
Forest: Jeanie is special, Monk. She belongs to me. You understand that?
Monk: Yes sir (Nods) But we snatched a cop. ThatÕs ainÕt smart.
Forest: Monk, heÕs the only one who can tell us where she is.
Tom: Hello, Mr. Forest. Out cold. HeÕs a tough monkey.
Monk: Look, he hasnÕt seen any of us. He doesnÕt know anything. Why donÕt we just dump him and forget it.
Forest: No, we donÕt dump him, we donÕt forget it. (Throws a box to Monk) We juice him. (Monk opens it to find a heroin kit)
Monk: OD?
Forest: How come youÕre always wrong? We donÕt overdose him. We string him out. We get him hung up on horse. Pretty soon heÕs gonna beg us to tell us where she is.
Monk: ThatÕs gonna take away.
Forest: So it takes time. Plenty more where that stuff came from. Go on, get started.
(Cut to the back room, a spoon his heated over a candle and then the drug is pulled into a syringe. Tom unties HutchÕs hands and holds his arm stead while Monk puts a tube around his bicep. Hutch struggles but Tom and another keeps his steady.)
Monk: You got one more chance, where is she?
Hutch: Stuff it.
(Monk injects the heroin and Hutch struggles, but then goes limp)
Monk: There you go, cop. The first mile on a long, long trip.
The Police Station: Day
(Starsky walks past DobeyÕs office.)
Dobey: Starsky
Starsky: (Mouth full) Morning Captain
Dobey: Get in here. (Starsky enters) ItÕs the middle of the afternoon, whereÕs that partner of yours?
Starsky: He had days off, Captain.
Dobey: His days off ended this morning. Now suppose you stop covering for him, get your tail on the horn and tell him I said to get his rear end in here.
Starsky: Truth is, Captain, heÕs sick.
Dobey: He didnÕt report in sick.
Starsky: Well, you know how it is, heÕs in love.
Dobey: What you mean is heÕs shacked up.
Starsky: Yeah, well, ah, she is a pretty girl, Captain.
Dobey: You tell him, I want him in here in one hour and ready for duty. You tell him that.
Starsky: ThereÕs only on problem, Captain.
Dobey: WhatÕ that?
Starsky: I donÕt know where he is to tell him that. (Starsky leaves, closing the door.)
The Secret House: Unknown
(Hutch is in a bad way and the goons are preparing him for another shot.)
Hutch: You crazy creeps.
Monk: Yeah, yeah
Hutch: IÕm not gonna tell you anything.
Monk: Another day of this heÕll have a regular ladder. I canÕt find a vain. (Flicks the skin til he finds one) There. (Injects the stuff and they lower Hutch to the bed)
Tom: Look at him; he took to that stuff like a baby to a bottle. Hey, come on, baby. Wanna tell us where little mummy is, huh?
Monk: ItÕs when he doesnÕt get it is when heÕll talk. (Takes off the blindfold and shines a torch in HutchÕs eyes.) I figure another day of this.
The Pits: Day
(Huggy is playing at the pinball machine while Starsky has a beer and watches)
Huggy: No I havenÕt seen him. WhatÕs the problem?
Starsky: He was due back on duty this morning and didnÕt show. I figure heÕs just stretching his time off.
Huggy: Yeah, you know Hutch. It must be some foxy lady.
Starsky: Yeah. Well, I checked her apartment. She hasnÕt been there for over a week.
Huggy: Checked whose apartment?
Starsky: Jeanie Waldon. You know her.
Huggy: Do I know her? Hutch brings her in here about two months ago and cons me into putting her on. Yeah, she was good too and then one night she had Hutch takes off out the back way, right in the middle of heavy trade. ŌGoodbye HuggyĶ ThatÕs all she said and theyÕre both gone. Biff bam thank you maÕam. Looked like sheÕd seen a ghost or something. That chick was pretty uptight that night.
Starsky: You hear from her you let me know, okay. (Finishes off his beer)
Huggy: Sure, hey, do me a favor? When you see Hutch, you tell him that he owes me one good waitress.
Starsky: Yeah.
(Huggy finishes his game and loses)
Huggy: Ahhh.
HutchÕs House: Day
(Starsky parks the Torino, knocks first and then goes inside. He looks around while playing with the framed picture of Hutch and Jeanie. He puts it down on the bed and checks HutchÕs jacket. Finding nothing he checks the bathroom and the wardrobe. He find HutchÕs gun.)
DobeyÕs Office: Day
Starsky: I tell ya, heÕs gone.
Dobey: No, he isnÕt. HeÕs off on a date with a beautiful girl, to use your words.
Starsky: Captain, you donÕt understand.
Dobey: What do you mean I donÕt understand?
Starsky: I found his gun back in his apartment.
Dobey: Do you take your gun out with you when you go on a date?
Starsky: Hutch wouldnÕt visit his mother without his gun.
Dobey: All right, Starsky, settle down. (Starsky sits down) What do you think happened to him?
Starsky: I donÕt know.
Dobey: What do you know about that girl?
Starsky: I know her name, I know where she lives.
Dobey: And?
Starsky: I canÕt find her either.
Dobey: Well, what do you want to do about it?
Starsky: Missing persons?
Dobey: ThatÕs a missing officer.
Starsky: No, I mean missing partner.
Dobey: (Picks up the phone) Dobey here. I want an APB on Kenneth Hutchinson, Detective.
Secret House: Night.
(Monk is shining a torch in HutchÕs bloodshot eyes. He looks awful. Forest stands behind Monk)
Forest: Hey, cop, whatÕs your name?
Hutch: I need some help. Some help.
Forest: WhatÕs your name? (Slaps Hutch) WhatÕs your name?
Hutch: Hutchinson! WhatÕs yours, you lousy creep? Give meÉgive meÉsome help.
Forest: ThatÕs fantastic, huh? What a little change in body chemistry can do.
Hutch: Get out of here. Get out of here, leave me alone.
Forest: Sure, baby, weÕll get out of here. (They turn to leave)
Hutch: (Crawls over to them) DonÕt go. You gotta help, donÕt go.
Forest: Hey, whereÕs Jeanie Waldon? WhereÕs Jeanie Waldon, huh? What did you do with her? Jeanie Waldon, where is she?
Hutch: I donÕt know. I donÕt know.
Forest: You think youÕre bad now, sucker. In a couple of hours youÕre gonna be banging your head against the floor. Jeanie Waldon, where is she?
Hutch: I-I donÕt remember. The beach
Forest: What beach?
Hutch: Seaview
Forest: What beach? Where did you take her?
Hutch: Seaview-Seaview point-point
Forest: Seaview point.
Hutch: (Trying to stand) DonÕt go. DonÕt go. DonÕt leave me.
Outside a bar: Night
(The Torino parks outside a bar, Starsky gets out and runs up to a small man with a cigarette.)
Starsky: Hold it Mickey.
Mickey: Hey, hey, Starsky. WhatÕs happening, huh?
Starsky: You tell me.
Mickey: Not here, not here. Inside. (Starsky pushes him inside, where he guides Mickey to an empty booth) I hear-I hear youÕve been asking around about your partner, huh? Huh?
Starsky: You know something Mickey. Come on.
Mickey: Nothing, honest. Nothing. (Waitress comes over) Hey, a beer. IÕll have a beer.
Starsky: (Sits down) Mickey, you owe me. You know damn well you owe me.
Mickey: Starsky, I ainÕt heard a thing. Honest. (Pause) Come on, come on, whatÕre you looking at?
Starsky: Nothing. Just trying to figure out how much I believe you and what IÕm going to do to you if I find out you were lying.
Mickey: Starsky, honest. I mean if I knew anything, IÕd tell ya. (His beer arrives and Starsky pays for it, but keeps it out of reach)
Starsky: Okay. Fifty.
Mickey: Come on, come on. You know I canÕt take that. Fifty bucks? I know IÕd if her half of that if I-if I knew anything. Come on, honest. (Starsky gives Mickey his beer back and the money. He gets up to leave)
Starsky: Mickey
Mickey: What?
Starsky: IÕm gonna find Hutch. One way or the other IÕm gonna find him and if I ever found out you were lying youÕre gonna have to find a whole new city to drink in. Got that?
Mickey: Yeah (Starsky leaves while Mickey drinks)
Seaview Point: Night
(Jeanie is asleep on the couch, sheÕs awoken by a car and she gets up expecting it to be Hutch. When Forest and Monk enters she covers herself up with her blanket)
Forest: Hiya baby.
Jeanie: HowÕd you find me?
Forest: Where do you go when you lose something? You go to the cops. Even a cop named Hutch.
Jeanie: YouÕre lying. He wouldnÕt tell you. (Pause) What did you do to him?
Forest: YouÕll see baby. (He touches her cheek) YouÕll see.
The Secret House: Unknown
(Hutch is lying on the bed, his hands tied with rope, possibly high. Monk brings in Jeanie and orders his men out)
Jeanie: HutchÉoh my God. (She sits on the bed and caresses his face)
Hutch: Whoops. Somebody must have tied me up. (Jeanie takes off the rope) You gonna untie me?
Jeanie: Oh Hutch. IÕm sorry. IÕm so sorry (Starts crying. Forest enters) Oh Hutch.
Forest: All right, baby, thatÕs enough.
Jeanie YouÕll let him go.
Forest: Sure. DidnÕt I promise you? ItÕll be like old times. HeÕll stay alive.
Jeanie: You let him go. (Forest nods)
Hutch: Beautiful.
Jeanie: (Gets up and walks past Forest) IÕll be anything you want.
(Outside the room Monk, Tom and the other goons are waiting. Forest gives monk a stare.)
Forest: (To Jeanie) LetÕs split
Monk: LetÕs get this over with.
(Outside Forest and Jeanie get in his car and drive off. A second later Monk, Tom and the goon leave with Hutch)
Tom: He ainÕt even gonna know what hit him, even when he hits the water.
Monk: Get in.
Tom: WhatÕs the matter, Monk? It ainÕt like we never iced nobody before.
Monk: WeÕve never killed a cop. Get in
(They throw Hutch in the back, Monk gets in the drivers seat and Tom waits for the car to drive out a little to get in. They drive)
Tom: If you take Ninth, you can hit the freeway to the harbor.
Monk: IÕll drive. You just keep your eye on him.
Tom: (Looks back at Hutch) Like a baby. Where do you figure, Monk.
Monk: Off the point. The waterÕs deep. The current oughta carry that body out about 200 miles.
Tom: By then, he oughta be sharks bait.
(Hutch suddenly kicks the goon in the back in the face and Monk is forced to stop on the curb. Hutch stubbles his way down the street and across the road, bumping into people and cars. Monk gets out to follow, but changes his mind and gets back in the car. Hutch continues to run into people as he stumbles along. Two uniformed policeman sat in a car notice him)
Bernie: Hey, isnÕt that that Detective? Yeah Hutchinson, thereÕs a Ômissing officerÕ out on him. Call it in. (Gets out to follow Hutch who heads down an alley)
BernieÕs partner: All units, missing officer sightedÉ
(Starsky hears on the radio) Detective Hutchinson, corner of Elm and second.
We are in pursuit.
(Hutch collapses in an alley, while the Torino screeches to a stop next to the police car, Starsky holding his badge out the window)
Starsky: Where is he?
BernieÕs Partner: In there.
(Starsky drives down the alley where Bernie is leaning over a twitching Hutch. Starsk runs to his side.)
Starsky: hutch, you crazyÉ
Bernie: HeÕs your partner, isnÕt he?
Starsky: Yeah. (Looks at HutchÕs muddy face and wide eyes. Rolls up his sleeve)
Bernie: My God. HeÕs a junkie. (Hutch falls into StarskyÕs lap)
Starsky: Shut up, huh? IÕll handle it.
Bernie: I gotta make a report.
Starsky: (Grabs Bernie) No report. This didnÕt happen, Bernie. Understand. This didnÕt happen. (Bernie nods) IÕll take responsibility. (Nods again) Thanks. Give me a hand. (Drags Hutch to his feet) Come on, Hutch. Come on. Up. (They carry Hutch to the car.)
The Pits: Day.
(Huggy sets up a pot of coffee and cups on a tray.)
Huggy: Diane, hold down the bar for me for a minute, huh?
Diane: Okay, Huggy.
(Upstairs in HuggyÕs back room, Starsky and Hutch are on the bed, StarskyÕs trying to get Hutch on his lap)
Starsky: Come on up. ItÕs okay.
Hutch: Jeanie. Jeanie.
Starsky: Yeah, Jeanie. (Hutch is shaking) Take it easy pal. (Huggy enters)
Hutch: Starsky, I need something.
Starsky: Yeah, okay. (Give me some coffee.)
Huggy: Man, heÕs hurting.
Hutch: WhereÕs my medicine. Give me my medicine.
Huggy: Give him this. (Hands Starsky a cup of coffee)
Starsky: Watch out now, itÕs hot. (Huggy takes off HutchÕs shoes.) Come on, easy, easy, easy. Easy (Forces Hutch to drink) Easy, come on. (Hutch canÕt swallow it) Hold on to it, Hutch, come on, hold on to it. Come on, hold on to it. (Huggy dabs his forehead) Hey, another cup of coffee for you. Come on.
Hutch: Need some help.
Starsky: How about some coffee, huh? (Hutch knocks the cup away.) Come on now.
Huggy: Nothing but sweat and pain for the next 48 hours.
Starsky: Come on, Hutch.
Huggy: Starsky, tell me how? Who?
Starsky: They tied his wrists, pumped him full of stuff. Somehow he got away. (Hutch spasms) ItÕs okay, boy, itÕs okay. Easy. (To Huggy) TheyÕre gonna come looking for him, whoever they are. Now nobody knows where he is, except you and me, got that?
Huggy: How about Captain Dobey?
Starsky: IÕll call Dobey. Hey, bring me some coffee, huh? A lot of sugar. (Huggy does what heÕs told) Lots. (To Hutch) ItÕs okay. ItÕs okay, IÕm right here.
Hutch: Starsky, give me some help.
Starsky: IÕm right here, boy. IÕm right here. YouÕre gonna make it, ya big Lummox. (He laughs, but then looks like heÕs about to cry.)
ForestÕs House: Day
(Jeanie lies on a air mattress floating in the pool looking unhappy. Forest and Monk sit at a table)
Forest: You are a jerk. YouÕre a stupid jerk.
Monk: You got the girl. Why donÕt you let it go?
Forest: That cop is running around out there. You want me to let him go?
Monk: He didnÕt see or hear anything.
Forest: He knows about Jeanie, doesnÕt he?
Monk: He was so far gone he doesnÕt even remember his own name.
Forest: IÕm talking about his memory. I want you to take him out. Me and Jeanie are gonna leave town for a couple of days. When I come back I want him gone and if you canÕt do it IÕm gonna find somebody who can. (Monk leaves)
The Pits: Night.
(Starsky and Hutch are playing checkers, but Hutch isnÕt enjoying it. When Starsky takes his go Hutch sweeps the board away.)
Hutch: You wanna help me, help me. Come on, do something. (Grabs Starsky while his back is to the door) You know where the stuff is. (Hits the wall splitting the wallpaper. He paces.) Get a candy bar. (Starsky hands him on from his pocket)
Starsky: YouÕre not gonna be able to keep it down.
(A knock on the door, itÕs Huggy)
Huggy: HowÕs my patient? (Quietly to Starsky) Dig. There was a john downstairs asking about Jeanie and Hutch and waving fiftyÕs around like a flag and another dude sitting outside in a car in a LTD Sedan, dark colour and this is the license plate number.
Starsky: Okay, look. Get Dobey at home, huh? His number is 555-6772.
Huggy: Okay, youÕre not looking so good yourself.
Starsky: All right. (Hutch makes a break fro the door. Starsky struggles to keep him back)
Hutch: I want some candy. I just want some candy. I just want some candy. Just let me out.
Starsky: I can remember a man who hated candy.
Hutch: Oh shut up!
Starsky: Now, thatÕs the Hutch I know, huh? (Hutch rests his head on StarskyÕs shoulder)
Huggy: (On the phone) Hello. Yeah may I speak to Captain Dobey please?
Starsky: Yeah, you got a ways to go, huh. Come on. Come on. (Hutch walks away and sweeps everything off the desk)
Huggy: Starsky?
Starsky: What?
Huggy: His son says Dobey and his wife went out for the evening. You wanna leave a message.
Starsky: Tell them IÕll call later.
Huggy: Detective Starsky will call back later.
Huggy: Need anything else? (Hutch sits on a chair)
Starsky: Yeah bring me some coffee and some more candy.
Huggy: Right. (Leaves. Starsky sits on a chair opposite Hutch)
Starsky: You feel like talking?
Hutch: No.
Starsky: Good. Who were they?
Hutch: I donÕt know.
Starsky: What did they want?
Hutch: (Angry) I donÕt know. If you wanna help me. Be my friend, help me.
Starsky: (Calm) what did they want?
Hutch: Jeanie. They wanted Jeanie. I-I think I told them where she was.
Starsky: Okay.
Hutch: I donÕt know.
Starsky: ItÕs okay. ItÕs okay. ItÕs okay. Hey. How many different voices did you hear?
Hutch: Three or four.
Starsky: Names.
Hutch: I donÕt know.
Starsky: Names.
Hutch: I donÕtÉ (Shouting) come on, Starsky.
Starsky: Names.
Hutch: Monk
Starsky: Who?
Hutch: Monk. Monk.
A Restaurant: Day
(Monk is at a table, alone. Tom enters and joins him)
Monk: Well?
Tom: A big, fat zero. And I been up and down the street twice.
Monk: And Starsky?
Tom: NobodyÕs seen him for more than 24 hours. (A waiter brings Monk his food) He was making the streets looking for Hutch. Since thenÉI tell you, if Starsky found him he could be anywheres. Maybe in a hospitalÉeven a police station.
Monk: No, no. Starsky would never let anybody know that his partnerÕs strung out. HeÕs probably helping him kick it some place and itÕs a cinch he knows somebodyÕs looking for Hutch. (Pause) And StarskyÕs looking for us. So I tell you what weÕre gonna do. WeÕre gonna help him.
Tom: How?
Monk: I want you to noise it around on the street that you know who strung his partner out.
Tom: What, are you crazy, Monk?
Monk: No, listen to me; I know what IÕm doing. I want you to get a hold of thatÉ
Tom: Mickey:
Monk: Yeah, Mickey. That street stoolie. HeÕd sell his old lady for 10 bucks.
Tom: Okay.
Monk: And maybe. Just maybe we ice both Starsky and Hutch and Mr. ForestÕll give us a Christmas bonus.
The Pits: Day
(Hutch is asleep on the bed sitting up while StarskyÕs asleep on the chair. He wakes up and looks at Hutch and then his watch. He goes over to the phone, sits down on the floor and dials a number, watching Hutch the whole time.)
Starsky: Starsky. Captain Dobey, please.
(DobeyÕs sat in his office when the phone rings, he answers it)
Dobey: Captain Dobey.
Starsky: Morning. Well, I think the patientÕs gonna survive.
Dobey: Well, Starsky, thatÕs good. Maybe I ought to recommend you for a transfer to rescue.
Starsky: Yeah, well, itÕs gonna be another 24 hours. HeÕs as weak as a kitten right now. Look, Captain, I need a DMV read on license JNJ322. It belongs to some fink who came around asking about Hutch. I had it last night, but I didnÕt want to talk to anybody about the problem except you.
Dobey: You want me to have an officer run that down.
Starsky: No, thanks. I just want to find out who owns it. Captain, itÕs important, but itÕs mine.
Dobey: IÕm gonna put you on hold. (Puts Starsky on hold.) DMV, please. Read-out.
(Huggy enters with a tray of coffee and Hutch wakes up)
Huggy: Good morning. Nectar or is it ambrosia? I never know which is which.
Starsky: Huggy, youÕre beautiful.
Huggy: I know, but you and Hutch look awful.
(Dobey switches back)
Dobey: Starsky?
Starsky: Yeah?
Dobey: On your John-Nellie-John-322. (Starsky starts to write) ÉAllen ŌMonkĶ PhilosÉnine-niner-one-five Merchamer Street.
Starsky: Thanks, Captain.
Dobey: Starsky?
Starsky: Yeah?
Dobey: Good work.
Starsky: Yeah. (Hangs up. To Hutch) Welcome back.
Hutch: ThereÕs such a thing as a mercy killing.
Starsky: Well, I wouldÕve let you slip off except, Huggy would never have forgiven me.
Huggy: ThatÕs right. Hey, you feel like a wash-up? I went by your place and picked up some clothes. TheyÕre in the bathroom.
Hutch: Thanks. (Heads to the bathroom. Starsky gets up)
Huggy: Hey, where do you think youÕre going?
Starsky: Hunting? (Puts on his other shoe)
Huggy: Hunting? A bear gets a look at you and heÕll die of fright.
Starsky: Yeah. Keep an eye on him. IÕll check in later. (Leaves. Huggy sits on the bed and the phone rings)
Huggy: Hello?
Dobey: Hello, is this Huggy?
Huggy: Speaking.
Dobey: Captain Dobey here. IÕd like to speak to Starsky please?
Huggy: Oh sorry, Captain. He just stepped out.
Dobey: Well, I donÕt know how this guy figures into this but tell him Mickey called. By the way, Huggy, do you know him?
Huggy: Yeah, I know him. HeÕs StarskyÕs fink, but heÕs not above playing both ends, you know?
Dobey: Well, Mickey says heÕs got information regarding Hutch. Tell Starsky that, huh?
Huggy: Right, Captain IÕll tell him as soon as he comes in.
Dobey: And also, Huggy. I appreciate what youÕre going for my boys.
(A shot of the Torino driving down the streets, passed a sleeping man with a bottle in his hands)
The Pits: Day
(Hutch comes out of the bathroom in a fresh pair of trousers)
Huggy: Well, well, well.
Hutch: Thanks for the razor. It was dull. (Throws his old clothes on the floor)
Huggy: Dull? Sure.
Hutch: WhereÕs Starsky?
Huggy: He split. Then I get a call from Captain Dobey saying that Mickey, some cat named MickeyÕs trying to get in touch with him.
Hutch: (Puts on his top) Mickey?
Huggy: Yeah. Yeah, claims he had some word to do with you.
Hutch: Well, heÕs usually reliable. (Puts on his shoes) You wanna call me a cab.
Huggy: YouÕre not going nowhere.
Hutch: Huggy, do you mind calling me a cab?
Huggy: Okay, youÕre a cab, but youÕre still not leaving here.
Hutch: IÕm gonna need to borrow some money and IÕll take a gun if you got one.
Huggy: Hutch, you out of your mind. You canÕt even tie your own shoes and you know I donÕt keep no gun.
Hutch: (Stands up) Huggy, the cab. (Huggy hands him some money)
Huggy: Cab. (He goes to the phone to call a cab.)
A Bar: Day
(Mickey is sat at the bar drinking his drink with Tom sat next to him)
Tom: It doesnÕt look like heÕs coming.
Mickey: You donÕt know Starsky. HeÕll be here, believe it.
Tom: Okay. I better call Monk. (Goes over to the pay phone)
(Outside Hutch gets out of a cab, pays the driver and goes into the bar. Inside Mickey is now sat at a table. Tom sees him and picks up the phone again. Hutch takes a seat)
Hutch: Hey Mickey.
Mickey: Hey, hey, Hutch. Hey, what-what happened to you?
Hutch: The word is that you can tell me.
Mickey: Yeah? Well, you look-you look okay, but something about you. You look sick, man, or something.
(Tom hangs up the phone and puts money in the jukebox)
Hutch: You had something to tell my partner. IÕm listening.
Mickey: Yeah, yeah, yeah, uh, HereÕs-hereÕs the scam.
The Streets: Day
(Starsky is cruising the streets and stops by MonkÕs house. He drives back and parks on the corner. He watches Monk run out of his house and into his car. He drives off and Starsky follows. A bulldozer drives in front of Starsky, blocking his way)
Starsky: Back up! Get that thing out of the way.
Man: How about taking a flying jump into the road.
Starsky: Police! Now get that thing out of here or IÕll haul you in for obstructing justice and creating a public nuisance. (The bulldozer backs up and Starsky turns the corner, but heÕs lost Monk. The radio goes)
Dobey: Zebra Three, Zebra Three, this is Dobey. Starsky, whatÕs happening with Mickey?
Starsky: Say again, Captain, I lost you.
Dobey: I sent word to HuggyÕs that Mickey had a message for you. Did you get it?
Starsky: Got it now. (Drives away with the siren on)
The Bar: Day
(Mickey and Hutch are still at the table.)
Mickey: So thatÕs-thatÕs the whole scam Hutch. Honest.
Hutch: (Looks tired) Hey, listen, scum I want it straight and I want it fast.
Mickey: Hey, hey, Hutch, take it easy, huh? (HutchÕs vision is blurring.) I mean, you donÕt look so good. Tell you want, let me-let me call a doctor. (Gestures to Tom.) Yeah, let me help you Hutch. (Tom picks Hutch up by his arms.) ItÕs okay Hutch. (Tom takes him out back)
Hutch: IÕm all right. (Tom takes him out the back of the bar)
Tom: Sure, sure, youÕre fine, pally.
Hutch: Let me go, let me go.
Tom: Sure.
Hutch: IÕm tired
Tom: WeÕre gonna fix you right up. (He leans Hutch up against a wall) One beautiful pop and your troubles will be over.
Hutch: Where are we going?
Tom: Dreamland, pally, dreamland. I got the ticket for you right here.
(Tom tries to get his gun out, but Hutch head butts him in the stomach, knocking him down and Hutch is off. Meanwhile MonkÕs car drives into the alleyway. Hutch is trapped between the car and Tom so he climbs on top of a fence and the car crashes into some bins. From the other end the Torino comes down, Tom fires at it, but heÕs run over. Monk gets out and fires at the Torino while Starsky takes cover. He opens the passenger door with his foot and Monk fires at it, breaking the window while Starsky gets his gun out, opens the driverÕs door, slides out and shoots Monk down. Starsky gets out, keeping his gun on Monk, jumps over the car and looks up at Hutch on top of the fence. He laughs.)
Hutch: WhatÕs so funny?
Starsky: You want me to send out for lunch or are you gonna come down from there, huh? (Hutch rolls to the side and Starsky keeps him from falling) Come on, Partner.
(Hutch manages to get down from the fence and into StarskyÕs arms.)
ForestÕs House: Day
(Forest and Jeanie approach the car with their luggage. Forest stops Jeanie at the car)
Forest: Come on, baby, be happy. (Pause) You know what the trouble with you is, baby? YouÕre trying to be something youÕre not. You and me, weÕre not gonna change. The sooner you get that through your head the better.
(The Torino comes up the drive way, stops in front of the car and Hutch is the first one out. Starsky has his gun on Forest)
Hutch: Go on, Forest, try it.
Forest: Hey, what is this? (Hutch takes his gun and throws him on the hood of the car. Starsky searches him) what are the charges here?
Starsky: DonÕt bore me with the details. Your man sung like a stuck canary. So, be a good boy, huh?
Jeanie: Hutch, you all right?
Forest: Hey, Jeanie, tell him about Vegas. Tell him about everything. (Starsky drags him to the Torino) Do you think heÕll want you then?
(Jeanie and Hutch look at each other and then embrace.)
Jeanie: Oh, Hutch. (The stay together and then break)
Hutch: You stay here and IÕll be back after we book him.
Jeanie: No, I-I wonÕt be here. ThereÕs too much between us. ForestÉwhat I was before.
Hutch: JeanieÉ
Jeanie: Look what happened to you because of me. (Pause) Look, look IÕll be back. You canÕt get rid of me.
Hutch: No. If weÕre gonna end itÉweÕre gonna end it. You wonÕt be back
Jeanie: And you wonÕt come look for me either, will you?
Hutch: No, no. (ThereÕs a long moment where they just stare at each other, HutchÕs hand on her cheek and sheÕs about to cry. The separate, Hutch goes back to the car, where StarskyÕs stood.)
Starsky: You okay?
Hutch: Yeah.
Starsky: Wanna drive my car? (Hutch laughs.)
